If you want to know what’s really going on in Afghanistan and you’re sick of the UK’s piss-poor excuse for news media, check out Rachel Maddow’s shows this week…

The Sound Of Her Wings…

I’m re-reading Neil Gaiman‘s “Sandman” series at the moment (The Absolute editions are beautiful things, if pricey). This page, showing Death on her rounds, is one of my favourites from any comic ever; so simple and so effective…

At last! Exactly what I was hoping for from the iPad…

Ever since the iPad was announced I’ve been hoping someone would make exactly this app for it…

Guess who’s back?

Apologies if you’ve visited this site over the last couple of weeks and found something other than the Brain here; I let my domain subscription lapse and crazy things happened as a consequence. I’m back now, though, so stop crying.

It’s been a while since I wrote anything here (or anywhere, actually) because I’ve been directing New Tricks, which, like any directing job, involves getting up at 5am and trying to bend 60-something people to my will every day. This leaves very little time/energy for writing.

I’m now in the edit (or would be if some raging pov hadn’t smashed my car window yesterday looking for my non-existent satnav) and have a few weeks of relative calm before I saddle up to direct the last two New Tricks eps of the series. Somewhere within this brief window I also have to re-draft my script for one of those episodes. It’s all go. It’a all money. I’ll not complain (except about the car window, FFS!)

So, what have you been up to? Actually, don’t bother, let’s not pretend I care. Some good things have come into the world or at least come to my attention while I’ve been gone from here, so I thought I should pass them on…

Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 album is absurdly good. Buy it immediately (along with the first two if you don’t already have them). Here’s a clip…

While we’re looking at music videos, I’m surely not the first person to commend the new Gorillaz track to your kind attention. YouTube won’t allow it to be embedded so here’s the link…

While looking up that link, I stumbled across a show called Archer. I may be late to this particular party, but it looked pretty damn good to me. Does anyone know anything about this? Am I hopelessly out of touch? Here’s episode one… (again, no embedding allowed)

All of the above should be enjoyed via the new Bowers and Wilkins P5 headphones which are are about the best looking thing you can clamp to your head.

Another recent release worthy of note is the new House Industries font: Eames Century Modern which is a thing of great beauty, created in tribute to the designers Ray and Charles Eames.

Finally, on the subject of Charles and Ray (husband and wife, incidentally, not brothers as is often assumed) here is 20 seconds of furniture porn featuring one of the most desirable objects in the world. I really really really want one…

Right, I’m starting my day. I need to update some photos on SmugMug soon and there may be a piece here on Eames in the next few days, now I’m in the mood, but for the moment: Begone.

BumpTop is here at last…

Back in 2007 I was blown away by this video…

It’s been a long wait but finally, after nearly three years, it’s here (and it’s free!)…

BumpTop Mac: Reinventing your Mac desktop.

Enjoy. I’m off to fling folders around…

Words Fail Me…

I haven’t written anything on here for quite a while. I suspect that’s because I’ve been writing so much professionally over the last couple of months that the idea of more words just doesn’t appeal.

I have, as mentioned before, taken up photography and have been posting a fair few pics at http://juliansimpson.smugmug.com/. That’s where I live for the moment and, as I start directing again in six days, for the foreseeable future. Come visit and tell me what you think.

I think I’ll leave writing to the writers for a while.

Read this…

A fantastic and frightening behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Copenhagen fiasco:

How do I know China wrecked the Copenhagen deal? I was in the room | Mark Lynas | Environment | The Guardian: “”

There’s also a very interesting sideways look at the actual science of climate change HERE

And, on that cheery note, I’m going Christmas shopping. Have an HDR pic I took yesterday…
